Build Your Own: Rangemaster Treble Booster

$99.00

Build your own premium germanium boost kit. Now shipping with vintage caps, carbon comps, and new old stock germanium transistors.

The Rangemaster circuit provides a colored germanium boost with an added tone knob to finely tune the color and shade of the treble boost. The center toggle position engages the stock capacitor value used in the original units. Two additional settings provide an “upper mid” and “mid” boost setting. Use it as a standalone boost or stack it with your favorite drive for some added warmth and color.

No expense spared in selecting parts for this build. Each transistor set is tuned with an amp / breadboard and shipped with the same eyelet board construction and components as our custom pedals. Kits include an in-depth build document with diagrams, step-by-step instructions, and build photos. There is also a supplemental overview of modifications for those looking to mod and further tune their pedal. This section includes mods lifted from vintage and boutique variations like the Beano Boost and Diaz Texas Ranger, and circuit analysis for those who wish to take a deeper dive and explore the inner workings of these circuits.

Included in kit:

  • Instructions to build the Dallas Arbiter Rangemaster Boost circuit

  • Germanium transistors: now shipping with new old stock Mullards

  • Vintage polyester film capacitors and carbon comp resistors

  • Pre-drilled / powder coated enclosure

  • Alpha pots

  • Vintage style jacks

  • FK footswitch

  • Eyelet board

  • LED / metal bezel

  • Your choice of knobs and enclosure color

  • 9V power jack or internal battery power options available.

TRANSISTOR OPTIONS

All options are new old stock germanium transistors dating from the early 1960’s to the late 70’s.

  • 1970’s Soviet UFO - soviet made military spec transistors with medium gain and low noise. These transistors are on the warmer side of this list.

  • 1974 Texas Instruments mil spec - an all around solid option with medium-high gain. Bright and articulate.

  • Texas Instruments CV series - mid 60’s UK made medium gain transistor. One of the warmest and most unique transistors on this list.

  • Mullard black glass OC45 - a close cousin of the Mullard OC44 transistor used in the original 1960’s Dallas Arbiter units. Closest in sound and spec to the original Mullard OC44.

  • New Market NKT - early 60’s New Market transistor highly regarded for its balance of articulation and warmth.

This pedal is available in 2 versions: "standard 1590BB" and "mini 1590A." The standard version utilizes eyelet board construction for a straightforward build - perfect for all skill levels (build difficulty 1/5). The mini version utilizes point-to-point construction and is a fun challenge for those with intermediate to advanced soldering skills (build difficulty 4/5). The mini features a 3-way EQ switch [Beano Boost] and the standard features a tone knob [Dirty Mac].
